The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations were implemented in 1988 and placed a Duty on all employers to consider all the materials they used and to which their staff may be exposed in their workplace.

These materials be they solid / dust, liquid or gas / mist in use may have toxic (poisonous) effects either immeadiatly or in the longer term. Employers are required to assess the materials they use, the frequency of use, their concentration and the effectiveness of any control measures to produce a formal Risk Assessment.
